The loss or anticipatory loss of an animal companion can be extremely challenging. Our pets are often one of our primary sources of unconditional love and emotional support. They become an integral part of our daily lives. Indeed, they are our family members.

Loss often goes unacknowledged in our society, and this is especially true of the loss or anticipated loss of a beloved pet. It may be difficult for others, particularly those who do not have close bonds with animals, to understand the depth of your grief. They may make well-intentioned statements of consolation that can feel invalidating, and leave you feeling more isolated.

Grief often encompasses a shift in your cognitive, spiritual, physical and emotional experience of life. Symptoms can include (but are not limited to) feelings of sadness, despair, loss of motivation or hope, difficulty sleeping, change in appetite, loss of purpose, fatigue, and loneliness.

There is hope after the loss of a pet, even if it may not feel like it right now.  It can be highly beneficial to have compassionate professional support to guide you through the grieving process.  Through therapy you will learn how to untangle  the thoughts and emotions that may be heightened in this time of turmoil, and find your equilibrium once again.
